THE CALL
A new play by Tanya Barfield
Directed by Leigh Silverman
March – May  2013
Peter Jay Sharp Theater
When Annie and Peter decide to adopt, they set their sights on a child from Africa.  But as the reality of this choice sinks in, it sparks an uncertainty that speaks to their very identity as White Americans.  Acutely funny and tack-sharp, THE CALL is a startling portrait of cultural divide, casting global issues into the heart of an American home.
“This is really a great opportunity for us to partner not only with Tanya—an artist with whom we have worked for many years as an early career playwright and teacher—but also with Playwrights Horizons, a wonderful peer organizations here in NYC,” says Andrew Leynse, Artistic Director, Primary Stages. “This collaboration marks our first new play partnership with another NYC organization and we look forward to giving Tanya and The Call the support of two great NY theaters:  Primary Stages and Playwrights Horizons.”

THE CALL will be the fourth production in Primary Stages previously announced 2012/2013 season:
CELEBRATING A FAMILY’S LEGACY:
American playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Horton Foote has been forever immortalized by a legacy of plays, including the Primary Stages production of Dividing the Estate which subsequently transferred to Broadway and received two 2009 Tony Award® nominations including Best Play and Best Supporting Actress for Hallie Foote. His legacy continues with the start of our 28th Season, which kicks off with an evening of Horton’s short plays and continues with a world premiere by Daisy Foote, Horton’s daughter.  Hallie Foote will appear in both productions.
HARRISON, TX: THREE PLAYS BY HORTON FOOTE

Pulitzer Prize winner Horton Foote’s stunning range as a dramatist is evident in Harrison, TX: Three Plays by Horton Foote. Foote explores the humor, darkness, and romance of the people of the titular town in these works: Blind Date, The One-Armed Man, and The Midnight Caller. Kicking off our season, these plays demonstrate Mr. Foote’s powerful insight into the human comedy. Pam MacKinnon (A Lifetime Burning at Primary Stages) directs.
HIM

This searing drama will receive its world premiere at Primary Stages, directed by Evan Yionoulis (The Violet Hour on Broadway).
20TH ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION:
For the third installment in the season, Primary Stages will revisit a play that helped to put both the company and the now-celebrated playwright, David Ives, on the map two decades ago.

ABOUT PRIMARY STAGES:
Primary Stages is an Off-Broadway theater company dedicated to inspiring, supporting, and sharing the art of playwriting. Under the leadership of Founder and Executive Producer Casey Childs, Artistic Director Andrew Leynse and Managing Director Elliot Fox, we operate on the strongly held belief that the future of American theater relies on nurturing playwrights and giving them the artistic support needed to create new work. Since our founding in 1984, we have produced more than 100 new plays, including Charles Busch’s Olive and the Bitter Herbs; A.R. Gurney’s Black Tie; Horton Foote’s Dividing the Estate (Two 2009 Tony Award® nominations); Brooke Berman’s Hunting and Gathering (one of New York Magazine’s Top Ten Plays of 2008); Terrence McNally’s Dedication or the Stuff of Dreams (starring Nathan Lane and Marian Seldes) and The Stendhal Syndrome (featuring Isabella Rossellini and Richard Thomas); Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter’s In the Continuum (which went on to tour the U.S., Africa, and Scotland); David Ives’ All in the Timing; and Conor McPherson’s St. Nicholas (which marked the playwright’s U.S. debut). In 2008, Primary Stages was honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work, which encompasses much more than the plays we produce for the stage. Primary Stages supports playwrights and develops new works through commissions, workshops, readings, and our two flagship programs: The Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group and the Marvin and Anne Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA).  Through these programs, Primary Stages advocates for our artists, helping them make important—and often transformative—connections within the theater community.
