French Day at University of Venda


Franco-South African academic collaborations intensify
French Days at South African universities are set to expand on the already extensive academic ties between France and South Africa
Pretoria: Monday 13th August 2012
On 16 August, the University of Venda and the French Embassy will organize a “French Day @ UniVen” as part of the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 & 2013.
The events will highlight Franco-South African scientific collaborations, promote future cooperation, and student exchanges.
This event takes place in a context of an increasing number of scientific articles co-published by French and South African scientists, their number increased by an astonishing 200%-plus over the past five years.
Pierre Lemonde, Attaché for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in South Africa: “France is South Africa’s fifth-biggest scientific partner – a collaboration which has seen significant growth in recent years.
“Franco-South African scientific collaboration encompasses many fields, prominent among them being paleontology, astronomy, the humanities, medical sciences, agriculture and oceanography.”
BonganiTembe, Commissioner General of the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 and 2013, says that the French Days will contribute to the promotion and reinforcement of already-strong links between France and South Africa.
The programme of the French Day at the University of Venda is indeed very rich and will traversevarious fields:
- Professor Bessong from UniVen will deliver a presentation on from ‘Seed Support’ to Bioprospecting Platform at UniVen?”
- Professor Denys from Paris-based renowned Museum d’HistoireNaturelle and long term partner with UniVen’s research Dr Taylor, will deliver a presentation titled “Of mice and men: rodent diversity and evolution studies and their social and economical impacts in Africa”
- Professor Barry from UniVen will talk about ‘The effect of Animal Assisted Reproduction Technologies (AART) on the genetic improvement of livestock in the rural areas of Vhembe district.”
- Professor Anseeuw from UP-based CIRAD research centre on agronomy and environment will talk about “Land reform and large scale acquisition of land in Africa”
The exhibition “Animal production for development”, designed by CIRAD will also be presented to the UniVen community during this day.
The Scientific Attaché of the French Embassy and Campus France Officer will organise presentations providing UniVen students and researchers with information concerning studies in France and collaboration with French partners.
The end will end by a cocktail function and by the screening of the movie “La Princesse de Montpensier” from famous French director Bertrand Tavernier.
