Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) is pleased to announce its lineup for the 2012-2013 season which will offer more ticket availability and an earlier schedule beginning in November. With three out of four shows featuring music from different eras, the “Rock, Swing and Sway” theme is aptly named. The shows include three musical revues, two of which are being written by Founding Artistic Director Nate Jacobs, and an August Wilson drama. Each production will run for five weeks as opposed to the previous four-week runs. Season opener, on November 16th, will be Nate Jacobs’ 50s Jukebox Revue, followed by August Wilson’s Jitney, a new Soul Crooners 2, and closing with the Tony-nominated It Ain’t Nothin’But the Blues. Subscription prices are still $75 for four shows and can be purchased online. Individual tickets will be available later this fall and will remain priced at $28 each.
“Our amazing success this past year created a wonderful challenge,” explained Nate Jacobs. “How can we accommodate the tremendous demand for tickets? Almost every show this year was sold out, one expanded before we opened the doors. Lengthening the runs seemed to be the logical answer. We are very excited about the upcoming season and the chance to introduce more people to our unique and talented Troupe performances.”
Nate Jacobs’ 50s Jukebox Revue, running from November 16th through December 16th, celebrates the music of that time with upbeat, energetic music from Fats Domino, Little Richard and Muddy Waters, to name a few. Dancing in your seats or in the aisles is expected with songs that include Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Stagger Lee and Shake, and Rattle and Roll.
Jitney by August Wilson will be presented from January 4th through February 3rd. Winner of NY’s Drama Critics Circle Award and London’s Laurence Olivier Award, the play is a vivid mix of comedy and drama, toughness and tenderness, love and pain. Set in 1970s Pittsburgh, the play centers around a group of unlicensed cab drivers as they strive to find honor and accomplishment in the harsh world around them.
Soul Crooners 2 is a new version of its previous self. Because the first Soul Crooners was such a runaway hit, the Troupe is bringing back the original cast with a new repertoire of songs from the 70s. From February 22nd to March 24th, Charles Manning, Leon Pitts, Mikeyy Mendez, Nate Jacobs and Sheldon Redon will be back to sing some of the greatest songs of that era. They’ll croon; the audience will swoon!
Closing out the season will be the four-time, Tony-nominated It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues. Opening on April 12th and running through May 12th, this musical revue takes a journey through time, sharing the evolution of this special music. Experience Blues like never before with renditions from African chants and southern spirituals, all the way to its most recognized era when sung in the postwar clubs of Chicago. This show always leaves the audience wanting more.
“It’s an exciting season and we are thrilled to make this announcement,” continued Jacobs. “WBTT is growing its audience and its talent. Each year just gets better and we think 2012-2013 will continue that trend.”
